About Adam Lehman & The Institute

About Adam Lehman

I originally hail from New York City, where I spent the first 30 years of my life. While "The City" offered me so much in the ways of cultural influence—I love theatre, art, and music—it was also a source of much stress.

Growing up, conventional medicine was the ultimate authority in my family. Born with severe breathing challenges and unrecognized food sensitivities, I was often flooded with continuous rounds of antibiotics throughout my childhood and teen years. During my formative years, being extremely short for my age, my well-meaning Dad took me to a doctor for an experimental treatment to accelerate my growth—which I discovered many years later was a heavy, multi-year dose of anabolic steroids. But hey! What did I know? I didn't like it, none of it made much sense to me, but I had no awareness about other options. I just popped the pills.

Fast forward to my twenties, when I dropped out of college to pursue my career in the music business in New York City in the late 70s and early 80s. While I was passionate about being a recording engineer, needless to say, my own physical health continued to get profoundly out of balance.

I finally came to realize it was time for a change.

The Paradigm Shift

I left NY for a year in Europe, and upon returning, recognized that while I had "made the break," I still wasn't necessarily healthy. That’s when a friend introduced me to a chiropractor who used a method called Clinical Kinesiology. It was an absolute paradigm shift – both philosophically and for my actual health.

Through the use of muscle testing (what I now call Muscle Response Feedback, or MRF), my chiropractor was communicating directly with my body. Within just a few days of altering my diet based on MRF's specific biofeedback, I experienced a profound, immediate improvement in my ability to breathe. My health didn't completely transform overnight, but it continued to improve over time, and that initial, undeniable shift kicked off a lifelong journey.

Fascinated and inspired by MRF/Kinesiology and the integrative healing arts, I began to explore a broad range of philosophies outside of the Western medicine boundaries I had grown up with. Thinking I would need a license to actually do any of them, I attended the Swedish Institute of Massage in NYC and became a Licensed Massage Therapist. As it turned out, I didn't need the license—but the foundation in anatomy and physiology became a cornerstone of how I understand the body, and how I teach other healthcare professionals today.

A Different Kind of Paradigm

While I loved massage, my true passion was clearly muscle response feedback. I was fascinated by the idea that the body knows exactly what it needs in order to heal... even if it's unable to always do so without a little help. With MRF's ability to express those needs to a skilled practitioner, that partnership provides the opportunity for the body to get what it requires to heal itself. Wow! What a completely different world from the Western medicine paradigm I grew up with.

My new passion led me to travel the world—wherever I needed to go to learn more about this amazing tool and the methods that utilize it (even on my honeymoon!). I became a total kinesiology junkie. And the timing was such that I was incredibly fortunate to learn directly from many of the originators in the field—from the founder of Applied Kinesiology himself, George Goodheart, D.C., to many of his "Dirty Dozen" cohorts (Drs. Wally Schmitt, Victor Frank, Carl Ferreri, Sheldon Deal, etc.), and the creators of the early methods of Energy Kinesiology that grew from that foundation – John Thie, D.C., Gordon Stokes, Richard Utt, Andrew Verity, and many more.

Lost Dreams Realized

In 1991, after spending the better part of 2 years in Australia – the leading Energy Kinesiology center in the world at that time – I fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I started my practice and opened what was then known as the Bay Area Center of KinesioHealth.

But there was another dream... one I assumed was dead when I dropped out of college to pursue my career in the music business: that of becoming a teacher. After taking my very first workshops in Touch for Health and One Brain, I discovered that each had paths to becoming an instructor. For any trainings that offered that option, I immediately jumped on board. I began teaching local workshops, officially starting my path as a trainer.

While I learned and became certified in many methods of MRF—logging thousands of hours of training over the years—the one I landed on the most was Applied Physiology (AP), the work of Richard Utt. While I integrated much of my overall learning into my practice, AP became the core model around which my clinic work was based.

I became an AP instructor, and my teaching career eventually led me to travel to four continents as the International Applied Physiology Advanced Instructor and Instructor Trainer... teaching others how to use AP in practice as well as to teach AP to others. I did this for 20 years.

It became clear that teaching MRF was the true expression of my passion for the work. My deepest joy comes from distilling the art and science of Energy Kinesiology down to a clear, accessible form that others can learn and use to help facilitate healing—and watching the light bulbs go off as they recognize the ease and power of what they're learning and able to do.

Stepping Out

Following the passing of Richard Utt and a necessary parting of ways with the organization, I stepped out on my own and began to develop my own live workshops, including the Holographic Explorer series amongst others, much of which is based on my own research and experience.

In 2018, I created the first truly virtual MRF/Energy Kinesiology training: the Integrated Wellness Facilitator Training (IWFT)—designed, over the course of  7 modules, to take someone who knows nothing to being able to work with people and get results using a diverse kit bag of healing modalities.

I continue to work on expanding my current offerings while creating new ones to offer a well rounded educational program.

My Teaching Philosophy

In whatever workshops or programs I teach and/or create, my goal is to offer an educational experience that provides you with both the "how" to do MRF and its related healing arts, along with the underlying "why"—integrating the science of the body with the bioenergetic principles of the energetic field that connects us all.

I love MRF because of its integrative nature, which makes it relevant across the entire healing arts spectrum.

The Next Chapter

In 2020, I retired from full-time clinical practice and relocated to the beautiful foothills of Fort Collins, Colorado. Today, as the Founder of the Institute of BioEnergetic Arts & Sciences, my focus is entirely on training and mentorship. I've done my best, based on my background and experience, to provide the best pathway to learning and applying this work available today.

Whether you're a total newbie or an experienced health professional looking to expand a long-time practice, MRF/Energy Kinesiology offers the most truly holistic approach to health and well-being I've seen.

If you are interested in learning how to facilitate real transformation for yourself and others, I’d love to stay connected!

The best way to start is by joining my email list—a space where I share insights on MRF and related healing arts, our energetic universe, and updates on upcoming trainings. Let's see what we can build together.
