Elements are a philosophical metaphor used in several ancient Eastern cultures’ health models. They speak to the relationship between the person and his/her environment. By maintaining harmony within oneself and with the environment, health is maintained as well. In classic Chinese medicine, there are five elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. Each element has related meridians with specific attributes such as yin/yang, emotions, colors, and sounds/smells/tastes. When George Goodheart, D.C. (see Applied Kinesiology) established the muscle/meridian relationship, bridging aspects of Western and Eastern philosophies, the 5 Element system became an important tool for balancing. It is used in Touch for Health with 5 Element balancing, and throughout the Holographic Explorer series of workshops.
